How much does a solar + EV charger bundle cost?
A 9-11 kW solar array sized for home + one EV plus a Level 2 charger and any required electrical panel work typically runs $30,000 to $45,000 installed in Connecticut. Eversource and United Illuminating EV-charger rebates can take a few hundred dollars off, and Smart-E financing can spread the cost into monthly payments.
Can the EV charger be powered directly by the solar panels?
Yes, with the right setup. We can wire the charger so it preferentially draws from solar production when the array is producing. Smart chargers (Wallbox, Emporia, JuiceBox) can be configured to throttle or pause based on excess solar generation, effectively charging your car on free, on-site electricity.
Do I need a service upgrade?
Often, but not always. A Level 2 charger pulls 32 to 48 amps continuous. If your home is on 100A service with central A/C and electric appliances, adding solar + EV usually requires an upgrade to 200A. Smart load management (Span, intelligent breakers) can sometimes avoid that. We confirm in writing after the load calculation.
What incentives apply?
Eversource and United Illuminating both have residential EV-charger rebate programs (typically $300 to $1,500), and Connecticut Green Bank Smart-E covers the financing. If you add a battery, the CT Energy Storage Solutions incentive applies too. We walk through current eligibility at the estimate.
How long does the full bundle install take?
Roof work for solar is 1-3 days. EV charger install is a few hours, usually the same day as the solar inverter wiring. Permitting and utility interconnection add 4-10 weeks. Project-managed end to end.
