What does "smart home electrical" actually include?
At minimum it means smart switches, dimmers, and plugs that you can control by app or voice. Beyond that it can include smart electrical panels (like Span), whole-home energy monitoring, automated lighting scenes, motorized shades, smart locks and doorbells, and integration with your solar, battery, and EV charging systems.
Do I need a smart hub or does it work with Apple / Google / Amazon?
Most modern smart electrical devices (switches, panels, EV chargers) speak Wi-Fi or Matter and connect directly to Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or SmartThings. A dedicated hub helps when you want robust automations or many devices, but it is not strictly required.
Can I retrofit a smart system into my older Connecticut home?
Yes. Most older homes can host smart switches and outlets without rewiring, as long as a neutral wire is present in each switch box (most CT homes built after the 1980s have this). Older homes without neutrals require alternative wiring or specific "no-neutral" smart switches.
Does smart-home electrical integrate with solar and battery?
Yes. Span Smart Panel, Lumin Smart Panel, Enphase IQ Battery, FranklinWH, and Tesla Powerwall all expose smart controls. We design the install so your solar, battery, EV charger, and smart panel see each other and behave correctly during outages and during normal use.
How much does a typical smart-home electrical upgrade cost?
A meaningful smart-switch and outlet retrofit for a 3-bedroom CT home typically runs $2,500 to $6,000 installed depending on scope. Adding a Span Smart Panel pushes the total into the $9,000 to $14,000 range. Bundling with a service upgrade, solar, or battery install is the most cost-effective sequence.
Will you help with the app setup and automations?
Yes. After the wiring is done, we commission every device in its corresponding app (Lutron, Leviton, Span, Apple Home, Google Home), confirm it responds, and walk you through the core automations. We do not leave you with a pile of devices and a Wi-Fi password.
