Whole-home electrification means replacing every fossil fuel appliance in your home - gas furnace, gas water heater, gas range, gas dryer - with electric equivalents powered by renewable energy from your rooftop. Why Sequence Matters
You cannot efficiently electrify a home all at once - the upfront cost would be overwhelming and the electrical infrastructure needs to be built in the right order. The correct sequence for most Connecticut homes is:
Step 1: Electrical panel upgrade (if needed)
Everything else depends on your panel having adequate capacity. A 100A panel cannot support solar, a heat pump, an EV charger, and an electric water heater simultaneously. Get the panel right first.
Step 2: Solar panels + optional battery
Solar generates the clean electricity that makes the rest of electrification financially sensible, so it comes early in the sequence.
Step 3: EV charger
The EV charger is typically the next addition - modest cost ($1,200-$2,800), immediate utility (free overnight home charging), and eligible for Eversource/UI rebates.
Step 4: Heat pump for HVAC
Replace your gas or oil furnace/AC with a cold-climate heat pump. This is often the largest single electrification upgrade and qualifies for significant Eversource/UI rebates.
Step 5: Heat pump water heater
Replace your gas or electric resistance water heater with a heat pump water heater (HPWH). Eligible for utility rebates.
Step 6: Induction range + electric dryer
The last gas appliances. Lower priority than HVAC and water heating since stoves and dryers use less energy.

Panel Capacity: The Constraint That Controls Everything
