Connecticut Solar + Battery Incentive Stack: Every Incentive in 2026

Connecticut has more solar incentives than most homeowners realize, and using them together lowers both the upfront cost and the long-term cost of a solar or solar-plus-battery system. Here is every program available to Connecticut homeowners in 2026, how they interact, and what order to apply them.

1. CT Green Bank Smart-E Loan

The Connecticut Green Bank's Smart-E loan program offers below-market interest rate financing for clean energy projects including solar, battery storage, EV chargers, heat pump systems, and heat pump water heaters. Rates typically range from 4.5% to 7% depending on the lender and project scope, compared to 8-15% for a standard home improvement loan.

Smart-E loans are unsecured (no home equity required), have terms from 5 to 25 years, and can cover projects from $3,000 to $175,000. West Electric is a CT Green Bank approved contractor and handles the Smart-E loan application on your behalf.

2. Net Metering: The Ongoing Revenue Stream

Net metering is not a one-time incentive - it is an ongoing billing mechanism that pays you for every kilowatt-hour your solar system exports to the grid. In Connecticut, both Eversource and United Illuminating credit solar exports at approximately the full retail rate (roughly $0.24-$0.26/kWh in 2026).

For an 8 kW system in Connecticut, net metering credits typically reduce annual electricity bills by $1,200-$2,000 depending on your consumption pattern. Over a 25-year system life, that is $30,000-$50,000 in cumulative bill savings at current rates (before accounting for utility rate inflation, which has historically added 2-4% per year).

3. CT Energy Storage Solutions (ESS) Incentive

Connecticut's Energy Storage Solutions program pays a performance-based incentive for battery storage systems connected to the grid. The incentive is approximately $200-$400 per kilowatt-hour of usable battery capacity, paid over time (typically over 5 years) as the battery dispatches to the grid.

For a 13.5 kWh Tesla Powerwall 3, the ESS incentive could be worth $2,700-$5,400 over 5 years, which reduces the effective cost of a $15,000 Powerwall installation by roughly 18-36%.

Note: the ESS incentive availability and amounts are subject to program caps. West Electric checks current program availability at every estimate.

Prefer Not to Buy the System Outright?

A solar lease or power purchase agreement (PPA) lets a third-party company own the system on your roof. You pay a fixed monthly rate or per-kWh rate that is typically below your utility rate, with little or no upfront cost.

West Electric installs both owned systems and systems under CT-approved leasing arrangements. We walk through both options at the estimate.
