The work itself involves replacing the service entrance conductors (wires from the meter to the panel), installing a new 200A main panel with a full breaker lineup, replacing the meter base if required by the utility or inspector, and completing any required ground rod and bonding work per current NEC.

Your existing circuits are reconnected in the new panel. You do not lose any existing circuits in a straightforward upgrade.

Pairing a Service Upgrade with Other Projects

It almost always makes economic sense to combine a service upgrade with adjacent electrical work, since the panel is already open and a crew is already on site:

  • Add a dedicated 60A circuit for an EV charger at the same time
  • Run conduit for solar interconnection
  • Add a generator interlock for future whole-home backup
